How do I get the reward for a temporary event?

Temporary islands are more than just new areas to explore. They also offer you a chance to compete and win additional rewards for placing in the top 3 on the leaderboard. Leaderboard awards are granted when the temporary event finishes. You receive your leaderboard reward when the island closes.
