How do I get apples, grapes and bread in the Pirate Capital?

Apples, grapes and bread are required to complete characters' orders in the Pirate Capital.
You can get objects that can be merged to create apples, grapes and bread from chests and barrels (which are washed up in the Pirate Capital once every 4 hours, but not more than 8 barrels). You can view more information about all stages of obtaining these resources in the Journal.
Each of these resources ripens 3 times at specific intervals, and then withers. When you tap on a withered element, it turns into a level-one object that can be merged again to obtain a crop.
